Wal-Mike's in Trapper Creek Alaska |
Monday, August 02, 2010: Jesse spent Sunday night at Nenana, and then on Monday, drove down through Denali Park. Unfortunately, the sky was overcast, prohibiting a view of Mt. McKinnley, so he was a little disappointed at that. One of the locals told him that he had not been able to see the mountain for about a month—that the mountain is so high, it “makes it’s own weather” and is often obscured by clouds. He elected to not take the time for the bus tour through the park, since visibility was limited. He headed south toward Anchorage (a trip of over 300 miles from Nenana to Anchorage) and experienced his only scare with not having enough fuel. He had no idea that he would have to drive well over 110 miles before he found a gas station, after leaving Denali, and called me from Trapper Creek, where he finally found fuel. (see the attached picture of Wal-Mike’s & US Post Office in Trapper Creek) He stayed in a campground somewhere near Anchorage, and made the ‘mistake’ of putting his tent next to a waterfall—says the noise of the waterfall went on all night! (sounds like good sleeping music to me)
